Perfume Genius, the musical project of Seattle native Mike Hadreas, began in 2008 and quickly gained critical acclaim with the release of his 2010 debut album Learning. Praised for its raw emotional vulnerability and nuanced vocals, the album established Hadreas as a unique voice in music. Over the next few years, he expanded his artistry with albums like Put Your Back N 2 It and Too Bright, the latter featuring the anthemic single “Queen,” a powerful statement of queer identity. His 2017 GRAMMY-nominated album No Shape further cemented his reputation, earning widespread praise for its defiant delicacy and triumphant spirit.
In 2020, Hadreas released the critically acclaimed Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, produced by Blake Mills and featuring collaborations with prominent artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Pino Palladino. The album explored masculinity and traditional roles through distinctly American musical influences. He followed this with Ugly Season, a project born from his collaboration with choreographer Kate Wallich and paired with a surreal visual film by Jacolby Satterwhite. Now based in Los Angeles with his partner and collaborator Alan Wyffels, Hadreas continues to push boundaries with his emotive and innovative work.
